- Carries large toy or several toys while walking
- Runs stiffly (16-18 months)
- Climbs on and off furniture by himself (18-24 months)
- Walks up and down stairs with help (18-24 months)
- Can scribble
- Pours contents out of container
- Able to build tower of 4 or more blocks
- Points to correct object or picture when image is named
- Knows names of body parts, familiar people and objects
- Says several single words (15-18months)
- Uses two-word sentences (18-24 months)
- Follows one-step instructions
- Can sort shapes and colors (20-24 months)
- Begins playing make-believe
- Imitates behaviors
- Gets excited about company and other children
- Demonstrates independence and defiant behavior (18-24 months)
- Around 16 months separation anxiety peaks then diminishes
Activities/Toys:
- Share your toddler’s sense of discovery- point out and name objects, their colors and descriptions
- Take walks
- Encourage him to use his body in new ways- to climb stairs, to bend over, to push and pull objects
- Read to toddler every day
- Take her to library for group activities
- Label her feelings: “You’re mad because I took the toy away.”
- Reinforce language by repeating “finished” words back to him. If he says “ba” repeat “ball” back to him
- Encourage activities that let her make things happen- blowing bubbles, playing a musical instrument, banging pots and pans
Ask your doctor if your baby:

Can’t walk by 18 months
- Doesn’t develop a sturdy heel-toe walking pattern or walk only on her toes after several months of walking
- Doesn’t have about 15 words by 18 months
- Doesn’t use two-word sentences by 24 months
- By 24 months, doesn’t imitate actions or words or follow simple instructions
