Eight to Twelve Months

Milestones:

  • Can get to sitting position by herself
  • Crawls forward
  • Can get on hands and knees
  • Can go from sitting to crawling or sitting to lying on belly
  • Creeps on hands and knees
  • Can pull up to standing
  • Cruises- walking along holding onto furniture
  • Can stand unsupported briefly, and may walk a couple of steps alone
  • Uses pincer grasp
  • Bangs objects together
  • Puts object in and out of container
  • Pokes with finger
  • Imitates gestures
  • Finds hidden objects
  • Looks at correct image when picture is named
  • Responds to “No” and simple verbal requests
  • Makes simple gestures
  • Babbles “Mama” and “Dada” (8-10 months)
  • Uses Mama and Dada for specific person (11-12 months)
  • Shy with strangers, cries when mother or father leaves
  • Prefers certain people and toys
  • Repeats sounds or gestures to get attention
  • Finger-feeds himself

Activities/Toys:

  • Let her help and get her involved in daily activities- point to familiar objects in the grocery store, hand her items.
  • Play hide-and-seek games
  • Sing songs together
  • Read a favorite book
  • Play back and forth games- rolling a ball or toy between the two of you
  • Make sure your home contains things that interest him, like big, colorful books in the family room or a drawer full of plastic containers in the kitchen.

Ask your doctor if your baby:

  • Doesn’t crawl
  • Drags one side of body when crawling for more than the first month of learning
  • Cannot stand when supported
  • Doesn’t look for hidden objects
  • Doesn’t say single words like Mama/Dada
  • Doesn’t use gestures like waving or shaking head
  • Doesn’t sit steadily by 10 months
  • Doesn’t show interest in “Peek-A-Boo” or “Patty Cake” by 8 months
  • Doesn’t babble by 8 months
