about front b

Children’s Therapy Clinic
is a private, non-profit organization located in Charleston, WV. We provide comprehensive therapy to children with disabilities. If a child’s job is to grow, learn, and play, our job is to help a child be a child. We recognize that each child is unique and needs an individual treatment plan. Children’s Therapy Clinic offers a team approach to focus on each child’s needs and abilities by including parents, caregivers, family members, and other professionals involved with the child. Our therapists help each child to reach his or her full potential and help create the little miracles of a child’s first step or word.

A Message from Our Director

It is hard to believe that 10 years have passed since I became the Executive Director. At the time, my daughter had been a client of CTC for 3 years and I was a member of the Board of Directors. I was excited because I wanted to help other families like ours gain access to therapy services for their children, but didn’t realize I would learn a great deal, too! Over the years I have met many dedicated and determined families. The support you provide CTC allows us to continue   serving children. We couldn’t do it without you!

— Valicia Leary, Executive Director

Each child is evaluated at the onset of therapy. The therapists use standardized tests, informal assessment, observation, and parent interview. Once is it determined the child needs ongoing therapy, a treatment plan is developed that outlines the short-term objectives and long-term goals for each client.

These goals and objectives must be objective, measurable, and based on function. The child’s treatment plan is reviewed at least every 6 months and goals are added as others are mastered.

Children’s Therapy Clinic has been providing services to children with special needs in the Kanawha Valley since 1935 when it began as the Kanawha Society for Crippled Children and Adults. In 1969 it was renamed the Cerebral Palsy Clinic. Finally, in 1986 its name was changed to the Children’s Therapy Clinic, Inc., to reflect an expansion of therapy services to all children regardless of diagnosis.

In the late 90′s CTC faced financial difficulties due to changes in reimbursement structure for children with chronic disabling conditions from Medicaid and other third party payers. In June 1998, CTC and Shawnee Hills entered into an agreement under which Shawnee Hills agreed to provide therapy and other services similar to those previously provided by CTC. Children’s Therapy Clinic maintained its 501(c)3 tax-exempt status and became a fund-raising and advocacy organization for the children it previously served. Unfortunately, Shawnee Hills faced the same financial difficulties in serving this population as CTC and ceased providing service in April 2000.

The clinic’s Board of Directors worked with the Kanawha Coalition for Community Health Improvement and United Way to find a way to reestablish pediatric therapy services to the neediest children in the Kanawha Valley. Knowing that the Clinic would have to raise 100% of its budget through general fundraising, private contributions and grants, several changes and cuts were made to the operating budget. Children’s Therapy Clinic reopened on April 30, 2001 as a free clinic for children with special needs. Since reopening, the Clinic has been inundated with calls from parents and other providers seeking services for more children than the Clinic has the funding to provide.
After 9 years as a free clinic, CTC began billing insurance for those clients who have some coverage and established a sliding fee scale in 2010. Clients whose income is over 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) pay a fee ranging from $5-$50/session. Therapy services remain free for almost 75% of the clinic’s clients whose families’ incomes are below 200% of the FPL. With this change, we hope to continue to grow and be able to lessen the wait time for services.

In 2012 the clinic has surpassed the service level of 2011 by almost 29%. We need the support of this community to continue providing these services to the children of the Kanawha Valley.
